Hayter

Few British brands carry as much heritage in the world of garden machinery as Hayter. Founded in 1946 by engineer Douglas Hayter in the small Hertfordshire village of Spellbrook, the company was born from a single moment of inspiration: Douglas spotted a century-old horse-drawn rotary mower at the London Science Museum and, within 24 hours, had built a working prototype using spare parts and a second-hand two-stroke engine — famously covering the rotor with a dustbin lid. The Hayter Motor Scythe went into full production the following year, and demand grew rapidly from the outset.

By 1960, the quality of Hayter’s machines had earned the ultimate British endorsement: a Royal Warrant for the supply of horticultural equipment to Her Majesty the Queen at the Sandringham Estate — an honour that Hayter retains to this day. That Royal Warrant speaks volumes about the standard of engineering and reliability that Hayter has maintained without interruption for over 80 years. Hayter is celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2026, and its Spellbrook factory continues to produce mowers that are distributed throughout the UK and Ireland.

In 2005, Hayter became part of The Toro Company, gaining access to additional investment, technology, and international reach whilst retaining its distinctly British identity, manufacturing base, and commitment to quality. The flagship Harrier range — first introduced in 1970 and continuously refined ever since — remains the benchmark for rear-roller rotary mowing in the UK, beloved by professional groundskeepers and discerning home gardeners alike for its crisp striped finish and outstanding durability.
